AREVA is a mining company owned 85% by the French state, operating in Niger through its subsidiaries SOMAIR and COMINAK since 1968. Serge Venel worked in COMINAK, which operated uranium mines, from 1978 to 1984, and died in 2009 from lung cancer. Medical reports concluded his cancer was caused by inhaling uranium dust and cobalt- a recognised occupational disease by the French Social Security. His family brought a claim against AREVA. While AREVA was the largest shareholder of COMINAK (34% of shares), it did not hold the majority of the shares
